This article is quite at home with me as the author is involved with academia, as I hope to be at some point in my life. The academic reveals some strategies of coping with his bouts of depression to maintain his ability to work, some of these I feel are transferrable for other people.
The main strategies focus on forward planning and having some support in place to make sure that teaching and support wasn’t affected. These are something that maybe everyone could put in place if they know they are going to have a reapeat of depression. But this is not always possible. I don’t know if I would know if depression was beginning again and so I’m not sure if these are things I could do. Also, I know that if I got to my dark place again, there is no chance that I could carry on working.
This article gives a helpful insight into a life where other people are dependant on them and how they carry on with their day to day life. It also provides some helpful dealing strategies, but may not work for everyone.
