As discussed in the What is Depression page, depression can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain which medication can help correct –
One important consideration when someone is beginning their medication is that there is not just one type or one dosage that works for everyone. It may be trial and error for some time until the best medication and dosage is found for you.
Types of Medication
Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are one the mostly used forms of medication this is due to the lower side effects observed compared to other medicines. They are also used to treat anxiety problems. The SSRIs include well-known antidepressants such as Prozac.
The SSRIs act on a chemical in the brain called serotonin. Serotonin helps regulate mood, but it also plays a role in digestion, pain, sleep, mental clarity, and other bodily functions. As a result, the SSRI antidepressants cause a wide range of side effects
Popular Types- Citalopram,
Dosage- Doses can vary in range depending on the drug being administrated. The doctor will normally prescribe the lowest dose possible that works for you.
How long do they take- Medication can take upto 4 weeks to kick in so don’t think they will be a miracle cure. And other treatment alongside the medication is often advised.
Side Effects- When you get your medication you will see the countless side effects, they all effect people differently. The doctor will start you on a low dose to make sure the side effects are minimal if any.
Additional Information- Because each case of depression is different the first medication you try may not be the ideal one for YOU, so don’t be worried if you need to vary the type of tablet you are on. This may help you find the one that works for you.
