With a number of celebs coming out about having depression recently I think it is important to discuss the implications of this. Recent people coming out with having depression include Frankie Sanford, Danielle Lloyd, Freddie Flintoff amongst others. Raising the profile of this debillitating illness can certainly help beat depression as a “hide in the closet” illness. But more needs to be done to differentiate people’s views on depression as a way to describe “feeling a bit down”.
Although some celebrities understanding of the illness is still what I would called “caveman like”. Anna Chancellor recently described depression as ‘petty’. I see that from the outside the thoughts people have may be self indulgent and petty but the illness is anything but this.
I am sure there are plenty of people who when they see celebrities coming out as sufferers, say “what have they got to be sad about”, but this only illustrates the need to raise the awareness that this is not just a standard down feeling!!
